I started winging about 3 years ago on a blue planet 128L board and x-large 2000 carver foil... didn't have a whole lot of time or wind here in Hilo, Hawaii but had a lot of fun learning. was finally able to get a smaller board and inflatable so I could take it with me on mainland trips.. the RRD air Beluga. been loving the board but definitely need to get a real foil system. I have not been able to find any different front wings that will be compatible with the Blue Planet Carver foil system, so I am looking into starting over with a new brand. I was almost convinced on going with a Unifoil progression foil but then watched the wingman review of the Code 850s.. I am sure either would be a huge improvement but is the code system worth the extra$$$, and will they continue to add new wing choices or maybe I should just go with an Axis system with their tons of options??? I am just getting into jumping with the smaller board with foot straps but would also like to get a downwinder for those light wind days(which is most days in Hilo) just to cruise around. I am also getting into windfoiling but that board requires a deep tuttle box foil mast... Any brand suggestions that would check all those boxes would be awesome...

Wow. Definitely a lot of variables to consider. It’s not like it was 2 years ago when some foil brands were way better than others. Most brands now have good foils.

Unifoil makes nice foils. They tend to be user friendly more than high performance more surfy and easy lift than high speed or infinite glide. You can often find good deals on a full carbon Unifoil setup on Facebook marketplace.

Code is definitely in it for the long haul. They’ve come out with a lot of foils since the 850s including the race series. Their mast is very beefy and they make some of the glidiest foils.

AXIS has a ton of choices and is pretty affordable (if you get their aluminum mast. The carbon masts are stupidly expensive). The great thing about AXIS is you can probably get an HPS or ART set very cheap since now everyone is moving on to the Spitfires, Art Pros, and Art Pro V2s. The HPS 880 is an excellent jumping and surf foil and the 1050 is quite glidey. Or you can get a 899 or 999 for more glide.

I think it’s pretty important to go out and test some foils to see what you like. If you’ve only been on the 2000 carver, your mind will be blown by what else is out there. Even a 1 degree tail shim completely changes a foil’s feel. So there are infinite possibilities!

I don’t think you can go wrong with Unifoil, AXIS, or Code. It will be more a question of which foil to get than the brand. It sounds like you’ll probably need at least 2 front wings (something for lightwind and gliding, and something for higher wind and jumping). That could be accomplished by getting an AXIS 1099, 1100, 1300, or 1050 and an HPS 880 or smaller spitfire. It could be accomplished by getting a Code 1300 and 850. If could also be accomplished by getting a Unifoil 200 or 210 and smaller Vyper progression 125.

If you can’t test foils, you might consider getting a mast from Cedrus so you can ride different foils. There’s also a Unifoil adapter for the AXIS aluminum. Or you can get the NoLimitz V2 with Takuma adapter and I think that offers you a few brands compatibility. (I really like the nolimitz mast - very light weight and low drag).

As for Tuttle, I’m not the person to ask about that. I do think you can get a Tuttle adapter for AXIS as well. But most people winging with Tuttle boxes are riding Mike’s Lab. And unless you’re going to get a special Tuttle wingboard youll need some sort of adapter. Mikes lab is primarily a racing setup and very expensive.

Hopefully some of this info helps. I’m happy to continue flushing this out for you in this thread. How much do you weigh as that also matters a lot?

Oh Sabfoil makes excellent foils and they also have some good Tuttle options so you could get their Tuttle adapter to leave on the Wingfoil board and the track adapter for your wing board. They have a quick change system to make going back and forth easy.


@dcj uses Sab and would know more about their offerings. But yeah if Radiculo is on their foils you know they work!

nice thanks for the response ;).. that sabfoil mast would be cool for easy swapping from wind to wing... although i'd still probably have to change out the fuse, wind long, wing short... i've been eyeballing their leviathon 1350 for awhile for light winding... i'm guessing the medusa series would be the goto for freestyle jumping...? maybe the razor for an all around..? thanks again for all the info might have to go with the sabfoil go Italy...lol:) haven't found any place over here that will let you demo any foils yet.. maybe on Oahu....

I sent this thread to Dominique so hopefully he’ll chime in. I tried the Leviathon with a hybrid board and I was almost able to pump it on foil in zero wind. However once up it’s a very different sort of ride. Jibing is tricky. It’s more for dockstarting or learning to flat water paddle in my opinion. But maybe some of the smaller ones are good light wind foils. But yeah it will get you on foil in pretty much any wind. 😂

The 909 Medusa looks pretty sweet. 1000 cm2 and AR 8 should give it pretty good low end. If you are a lighter weight rider maybe a smaller one to go faster.

The Razor and Razor pro are their gliders.

I would guess the Razor Pro 875 would fill a similar range but it really depends on the concave and camber which I can’t compare just looking at the numbers. That foil is going to be a massive jump from your Carver 2000 and might take a bit to get used to. Something like a Balz Pro 899 would probably be an easier transition. Just to keep in mind.

I have the 909, 869, and 769 medusa pro. I love them for winging. They are a good combination of speed and glide. Faster than the razors but I have not tried this year’s pro line. I have the 1350 and enjoy that in winds under 10 knots. I can jibe and tack with it but it does take some adjustment. I have a YouTube video (@dcjtv channel) where nobody was foiling on lake Mojave (including windfoilers) and I had a blast on the 1350. I haven’t used any of these foils for windfoil, but I know a few Cabrillo sailors who like them for it.

awesome thanks for all the info guys!!! excited to get off this carver 2000.... I'm thinking I may go with the 909 and 1350 to start...? we get a lot of light wind days here in Hilo so figured I better go big, plus coming from the 2000. I have been wanting to try Lake Mojave, just got back from a 2 month trip to Vegas, Mead seemed doable on days especially down at Stewarts Point.
